Everything you need to know about the liquid limit at airports.

Basic guidelines for traveling with liquids by plane

  • The liquid limit applies only to your carry-on luggage, not to your checked luggage. You can bring as much liquid as you want in bottles exceeding 100ml in your checked baggage. Just remember to pack them securely to prevent leaks.
  • In carry-on luggage your liquids, gels, and aerosols must be put in containers of 100ml (3 1/3 oz.) or less.
  • The total amount of all liquids in your carry-on luggage cannot exceed 1 liter (around 34 oz.).
  • All your liquid containers must be placed in a single quart-sized, transparent, resealable bag.
  • Medications, baby food, and special dietary items are permitted in larger quantities but must be declared and inspected separately at the security checkpoint.
  • You can bring empty water bottles through security. Many airports have water fountains or refill stations where you can fill them up once you're past the security checkpoint.
  • Liquids you purchase after the security checkpoint (such as duty-free items) are not subject to the 100ml rule but must be placed in a secure, tamper-evident bag provided by the retailer.
